KEY TAKEAWAYS
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) means making your brand the source AI assistants quote, not just a link that ranks.
- AI answers draw on training data (slow to influence) and live web retrieval (fast to influence), so publish answer-first, well-sourced pages and earn mentions on sites AI reads.
- Measure it: track mention rate, citation rate and share of voice for a fixed set of buyer questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews every month.
A growing share of your buyers never see a list of blue links. They ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google’s AI Mode a question and get one synthesised answer, and that answer names a few brands.
If yours isn’t one of them, you’re invisible at the exact moment someone is ready to buy.
That’s what Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) fixes. Some people call it AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) or LLM SEO. The name doesn’t matter much. What matters is that the rules are different enough from classic SEO to need their own playbook.
How AI engines decide who to cite
Large language models answer questions in two ways:
- From training data. This is what the model “knows” about your brand from the web it was trained on.
- From live retrieval. The engine runs searches, reads the top sources and summarises them, citing some of them.
You influence (1) slowly, through consistent brand mentions across the web. You influence (2) quickly, by being the page the retrieval step finds, trusts and can easily quote.
Classic SEO gets you ranked. GEO gets you quoted. You need both, because retrieval still starts with search.
The 6-part GEO playbook
1. Make your entity unambiguous
AI engines think in entities: who you are, what you do, who you serve. Confusion kills citations.
- Use one consistent brand description everywhere: your site, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, directories and social bios.
- Add
Organization,Service,Product,FAQPageandPersonschema to your site. - Build a real About page with founders, credentials and proof.
2. Write answer-first content
LLMs love content they can lift cleanly. Structure every key page like this:
- A direct answer in the first 40–60 words under each question-style heading.
- Then depth: steps, examples, data, trade-offs.
- Tables and comparison lists, because they’re easy to extract and cite.
3. Publish information gain
If your article says what the top 10 results already say, there’s no reason to cite you. Add something new:
- Original data (surveys, benchmarks, anonymised client results)
- Frameworks with a name
- Expert quotes and first-hand experience
4. Earn mentions where AI looks
AI answers lean heavily on sources like Reddit, YouTube, review platforms, industry publications and “best X for Y” listicles. Your GEO plan needs a digital PR and community layer:
- Get listed in the comparison articles that already rank for your category.
- Contribute useful answers (not spam) in the communities where your buyers ask questions.
- Collect reviews on the platforms your industry trusts.
5. Make your site easy for AI crawlers
- Don’t accidentally block AI crawlers in
robots.txtunless you mean to. - Keep content in HTML, not trapped in images, PDFs or heavy JavaScript.
- Optionally publish an
llms.txtfile that points AI tools to your most important pages. Google says it isn’t needed for its AI features, but it’s cheap and some assistants may use it. - Keep pages fast. Retrieval systems time out too.
6. Measure AI visibility
You can’t improve what you don’t track. Each month, run your top 30–50 buyer-intent prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews and record:
| Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Mention rate | % of prompts where your brand appears |
| Citation rate | % where your site is linked as a source |
| Share of voice | Your mentions vs. competitors’ |
| Sentiment | How you’re described |
Dedicated AI visibility tools can automate this. So can a simple AI agent with a spreadsheet, which is what we build for clients.
What to do this week
- List the 20 questions your buyers ask before they buy.
- Ask them in ChatGPT and Perplexity. Note who gets cited.
- Pick the five where competitors win and you don’t.
- Create or rewrite one answer-first page for each, with schema and original insight.
- Re-check in 30 days.
GEO isn’t a replacement for SEO. It’s what SEO looks like when the searcher is sometimes a machine. Brands that start now will be the defaults AI recommends for years.
Frequently asked questions
What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
+
GEO is the practice of structuring your content and building your brand's authority so that AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews mention and cite you in their answers, not just rank you in a list of links.
Is GEO different from SEO?
+
GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. Google's AI features draw on Google's index, and assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity run live web searches, so strong SEO is the foundation. GEO adds answer-first structure, citable evidence (sources, statistics, quotes) and off-site brand mentions.
Do I need an llms.txt file to appear in AI answers?
+
Not for Google: its documentation says you don't need new machine-readable files or special markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. An llms.txt file is an optional, low-effort signal that some AI tools may read. It helps at the margin but never replaces good content.
How long does GEO take to work?
+
Pages that AI engines retrieve live can start appearing soon after they are indexed, so improvements to specific pages can show within weeks. Changing how models describe your brand from their training data is slower and depends on consistent mentions across the web over months.
How do I measure AI search visibility?
+
Pick 20 to 50 questions your buyers ask, run them monthly in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google, and record how often your brand is mentioned, how often your site is cited as a source, which competitors appear and how you're described.
